Thanks so very much fot this information..we are really really crossing our fingers that this signal will be able to reach a regular cell phone as we are opposite between Green and Dry Island on the north shore.
Next question for John...a digital land line 3 watt with a yagi antennae phone should work then?
You are really helping us..again love this web site...

John says the coverage is 10km from the tower. It is 8.75 km from the tower to Zee's Junction at 522 and 524. The park is about 5 km from the tower. The west end of Restoule Lake is 9.6 km. All as the crow flies.

Diane : Good comments, but some clarifications are needed...

Netspectrum: ""Their main deal is the installation of antennas, towers, receivers, etc… they will, I understand,be servicing Restoule Park with high speed service in the very near future. It appears that they offered Restoulians internet service initially because no other internet provider was ready to offer it to our area.""

And there still isn't...

""Netspectrum, I learned, is the company that installs the tower and home equipment for internet providers like Ontera""

One thing that needs to be made clear is Netspectrum is not going away and all others like Ontera are just re-selling their service. That is why they (Netspectrum) OWNS the tower, the system and your home equipment. You will never see an Ontera tech come to your home to do the wireless broadband install.

Ontera will make a couple of bucks off of each subscriber they sign up and since they don't offer any broadband wireless themselves in the area, it is just another revenue stream. The same goes for Vianet; all services with the exception of dial-up are simple reselling for the likes of Bell (DSL), Rogers/Cogeco (Cable Modems), and Netspectrum (wireless).

So when you switch to Ontera you will still be using the Netspectrum system, which I might add like Vianet; Ontera will have no direct control over the main wireless system and that's why Vianet is "trying" to resolve the bandwidth issue and not simply resolving it!

And this is also why Ontera is "trying" to get Netspectrum to move their gear onto someone else's tower (Bell).

What is the purpose of erecting towers everywhere and spending millions of the taxpayers dollars in the first place? Surely, there are cheaper technologies like SPOT offered by Rogers Cable to make people feel safe... Safety is not the same thing as convenience...

""Some Restoulians have been a wee bit upset with the lack of weekend and evening tech service offered by Net Spectrum (their internet service provider). I hear (from a reliable source) that the level of service will not change because Netspectrum really isn’t into providing internet service .""

Netspectrum is a "division" of Spectrum 2000 Group, a wireless radio company based in Sudbury Ont., their focus is selling and servicing mostly Motorola two-way radios for communications.

www.spectrum2000.com

They are NOT experts at IP networking, security, or application servers. Netspectrum resells wireless broadband internet access as does Vianet, and others on behalf of the Spectrum2000 Group.

What Netspectrums' and the reseller's (Vianet, Ontera, etc) users really need to be concerned about is the lack of security both on their wireless systems and on their application servers (email, etc).

I'd be curious to see what speeds the folks in Restoule are getting from Netspectrum/Vianet, I would encourage users to use the www.speedtest.net tool (which is excellent) to test the speed of their connection. Please post your results for all to peruse. I will be shocked if you are getting what you are paying for each month.

Oh ya Bell does offer wireless broadband services in many areas, they use WiMax instead of Wi-Fi. What Bell seems to be doing is going to all of these areas serviced by Netspectrum and once they have a subscriber base, Bell will come in and offer competing services...

DB

If you want to be Bell Canada, you have to do a better job than Bell Canada. If not, you are the same, if not worse...

[From] p2a3j7
[Contract] $49 per month (12 month contract)
[From order to live] about 10 days
[Positives] "When it's up, you get what they say you will get 1.5 down 500 up."
[Negatives] "Been quite a bit of down time. Towers are linked to North Bay Ont."
[Bottom Line] "Up north It's the best deal going. Xplornet sat service is only other option."

      ·Xplornet
      Cost 150.00 for install.
You don't buy the gear or rent it.
They will charge you 60.00. If when they come and get a signal and you don't sign up right away.
They have to drive 60 miles to the tower or 100 K's from North Bay.
There is no modem in your house. just a power pack with a eithernet connection.
The modem is in the pannel outside.
Their web site is a joke. Worst I have ever seen. They don't even have a pic of the pannel they put outside on the house.
When you call tech support there is no waiting. Best of all you are on the line with a person. No phone prompts.
Not many people are on the service.
      1.5 down,500 up.
If the power goes out on a tower you are linked threw to North Bay and Hydro goes out. Your service is down even though your local Hydro is on.
They have no backup generaters on the towers and up north the power goes out quite a bit.
Thye tower is only 100 feet high and quite a few people close to the tower can't get service.
The are taking off the panels on the tower and putting on an extention.
Stay tuned for an update on service when thats done. Tech said that will be happening over the next 2 weeks.

Question for John Woods regarding the range for internet connection and same for cell phone coverage...is there anyway of telling or projecting the range for this..I am hoping it can and will reach into Restoule Park and the far west end of north shore at the very least....would appreciate that answer if at all possible.

I am just delighted to hear this news.....we will all be just delighted to have our cell phones/blackberries work. To date ours cuts out just before Zees.
Living out on the north shore of the lake having had our analog service cut we are without any life line save our trusty boat and the knowledge there is a phone at Northern Pines thank God!
The sooner the better but just how far it can/will service is another story I think. We will just have to see how this all plays out.
